Independent Adoptions: are completed without the involvement of a state or private agency.  Independent adoptions in Georgia are between a child and a third party who is neither the stepparent nor a relative of that child.  The attorneys at Steffas & Associates, P.C. have experience in representing both birth parents and prospective adoptive parents in independent adoptions in Georgia.

Stepparent Adoption: involves the adoption of a child by the new spouse of the birthparent.  It requires the termination of rights of the other biological or legal parent of the child.  The termination of rights can be achieved either through voluntary surrender or through court-ordered termination based on lack of financial or emotional involvement of the non-custodial parent. The attorneys at Steffas & Associates, P.C. have experience in representing Step-parents in achieving full legal parental rights to their step-children in Georgia.

Relative Adoption: involves the adoption of a child who is related by blood or marriage to the prospective adoptive parents, who are the child’s grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle, great aunt, great uncle, or sibling.  The termination of the parental rights of the child’s legal parents can be achieved either through voluntary surrender or through court-ordered termination based on lack of financial or emotional involvement. The attorneys at Steffas & Associates, P.C. have experience in representing families in relative adoptions in Georgia.

Domestication of an Adoption or Guardianship completed Abroad: Domestication of a Foreign Adoption Decree involves a state “re-adoption” process when a family has already obtained a final adoption or guardianship abroad.  Depending on the type of visa with which the child enters the United States, this may or may not be a necessary step to take in order to complete the immigration process.   The attorneys at Steffas & Associates, P.C. have experience in evaluating these cases and advising clients.

Adult Adoptions: involve the adoption of a person who is over 18 in Georgia. The adoptions are more simple to complete than the other types of adoptions in Georgia, as they do not require the consent or termination of the legal parents’ rights.  Steffas & Associates, P.C. attorneys have experience in helping families to obtain legal recognition of what is already in their hearts.

Birth mother Representation: Steffas & Associates, P.C. attorney have experience and compassion in representing birth mothers.  If you are a birth mother, we will help you through making your adoption plan and give you non-judgemental, zealous and personal representation.

ICPC – Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children: The Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) requires strict rules to be followed and steps to be taken before a child can be moved from one state to another for the purposes of adoption.  Steffas & Associates, P.C. handles these cases regularly and can help ensure a smooth transition from one state to another in anticipation of an adoption.

Guardianship: allows for an adult to gain legal custody over a child.  This process does not bestow full parental rights, nor does it require termination of parental rights of the birth or legal parents.  Steffas & Associates, P.C. attorneys have experience in both Guardianship and Adoption and can help you to decide which is right for your family.
